The seminar was organized in collaboration with the Serbian Society for the Fight Against Cancer and the Working Group for Patient Support of the Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia. Patients from the IORS learned about the basic principles of modern radiation therapy, acute and late adverse reactions to radiotherapy, the important facts they need to know during their treatment, the significance of the psychological support for cancer patients, different activities and forms of patients’ support of the IORS Working Group for Patient Support, as well as about key biological factors underlying normal tissue reactions to radiotherapy. The patients had the opportunity to learn about the radiobiology research of the RadExIORSBoost project team and their efforts towards identifying possible predictors of radiosensitivity, which are essential to establishing a personalized radiotherapy approach in the future. The event ended with a discussion between the cancer patients and the lecturers, who addressed all the questions and concerns of the patients undergoing radiotherapy. The success of the seminar highlighted the benefits of attending educational events for the cancer patients. Код 5% до 10% пацијената са малигним обољењима који се лече радиотерапијом може да дође до појаве нежељених ефеката вишег градуса, који значајно могу да утичу на квалитет живота. In the field of radiobiology that investigates normal tissue radiosensitivity, a wide spectrum of biological and functional tests have emerged as candidates for the prediction of normal tissue radiosensitivity and adverse effects, which may considerably affect patients' quality of life. Adverse effects following prostate cancer (PCa) radiotherapy (RT) include bladder and urinary complications (2), as well as rectal toxicity (3), among others. The irradiation response of patient-derived lymphocytes has been associated with acute and late normal tissue reactions to radiotherapy. The approaches which were used include measurements of cytotoxic effects (including apoptosis and cell cycle delay), identification and analyses of specific genes and use of methods which reflect genotoxicity and DNA repair. The most frequently employed approaches that detect damage of the genotoxic material which is induced by ionizing radiation (double strand breaks and oxidative damage) are chromosomal aberration (CA) analyses of metaphase cells, micronucleus (MN) experiments detecting structural and numerical CA, γH2AX assays which can be used to measure double strand breaks, and single cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) assays reflecting single and double DNA strand breaks . Team members from the University of Leicester and colleagues from the Research and Enterprise Division kindly welcomed Dr. Matić and Dr. Petrović, sharing their valuable knowledge and immense expertise in administration, pre-award, and post-award project management. The IORS team members visited the Department of Genetics, Genomics and Cancer Sciences, Research and Enterprise Division, Hope Cancer Trials Centre, Leicester Molecular Diagnostics and the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, as well as Radiotherapy at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. The meetings organized at the University of Leicester helped the RadExIORSBoost project team members to gain new knowledge in sample and data management, and valuable insights into organizational structure of research and educational institution. Project team members, Prof. Dr. Christopher Talbot, Prof. Dr. Carsten Herskind, and Dr. Adam Webb also had presentations at the RGC Annual Meeting.  - [Expert visit of Professor Dr. Sarah Kerns to Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia](https://radexiorsboost.com/expert-visit-of-professor-dr-sarah-kerns-to-institute-for-oncology-and-radiology-of-serbia/): The RadExIORSBoost project team was honored to host Professor Dr. Sarah Kerns, distinguished expert in radiogenomics and radiobiology, from the Department of Radiation Oncology, Medical College of Wisconsin, United States of America. Her research projects are focused on inherited genetic variants and other biological factors related to normal tissue reactions in cancer patients receiving radiation therapy and the development of machine learning- based predictive models for a personalized radiotherapy approach. She is one of the two lead coordinators of the international Radiogenomics Consortium. Prof. Kerns visited the Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia from 26 August 2025 to 30 August 2025. A major highlight of the expert visit was Prof.  Kerns's lecture, titled "Genetic Risk Scores for the Prediction of Late Radiation Toxicity in Prostate Cancer". The outstanding  lecture held on 27 August 2025 at the IORS amphitheatre provided a valuable insights into her research in the field of radiogenomics and sparked a valuable discussions. Prof. Kerns visited the facilities and infrastructure of the Department for Radiotherapy of Solid Tumors and the Department of Experimental Oncology.  Her expert visit was an excellent opportunity for the RadExIORSBoost project team members to present ongoing project activities, share research findings, and discuss cutting-edge scientific approaches and advances in radiogenomics and radiobiology with Prof. Kerns. The entire RadExIORSBoost project team, comprising members from all partner institutions including the Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia, Medical Faculty Mannheim, Medical University of Vienna, Institute of Oncology Ljubljana, and University of Leicester, actively participated.This training, which focused on genotoxicity and investigation of DNA damage, was a crucial component of the comprehensive training program of the RadExIORSBoost project. - [Short-term training visit of the IORS team members at Center for Cancer Research, Medical University of Vienna](https://radexiorsboost.com/short-term-training-visit-of-the-iors-team-members-at-center-for-cancer-research-medical-university-of-vienna/): Our project team members, PhD students Ivana Pašić and Maja Petrović, participated in a two-week scientific training program at the Center for Cancer Research at the Medical University of Vienna (MUW), from June 23 to July 4, 2025, as part of the RadExIORSBoost project. This experience was rewarding, providing hands-on work, inspiring discussions, and new insights into genotoxicity. The short-term visit provided IORS team members an opportunity to collaborate with a dedicated and welcoming team from the Center for Cancer Research. They deepen their knowledge through practical training, meaningful idea exchanges, and experimental setup ideas for genotoxicity testing. During this visit, Ivana and Maja performed the comet assay, a versatile method for detecting DNA damage in individual cells. They completed all steps of the alkaline comet assay, also known as single cell gel electrophoresis assay, from preparing the slides and embedding the cells into low-melting-point agarose to conducting electrophoresis, evaluating the comets, and performing statistical analysis of the results. - [The Second RadExIORSBoost Educational Seminar for cancer patients treated with radiotherapy](https://radexiorsboost.com/the-second-radexiorsboost-educational-seminar-for-cancer-patients-treated-with-radiotherapy/): The RadExIORSBoost Horizon Europe Project team was pleased to organize the second educational seminar for patients with malignant diseases titled "Personalized approach in radiotherapy: From science to the clinic" held in the new amphitheater of the Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia on June 17, 2025. Cancer patients actively participated and had the opportunity to ask and hear more about radiation therapy techniques, possible side effects, radiobiology and the response to radiation from the aspect of molecular and cellular biology, psychological support that is always available to them, the history and activities of the Serbian Society for the Fight Against Cancer, which is available to all citizens. - [RadEXIORSBoost project team in a visit to the elementary school “Josif Pančić”](https://radexiorsboost.com/radexiorsboost-project-team-in-a-visit-to-the-elementary-school-josif-pancic/): As the end of the school year is approaching, on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, the RadExIORSBoost project team visited the elementary school "Josif Pančić", which has achieved great success at biology competitions during past years and has a long-lasting tradition of providing high-quality education. The team presented project activities to the pupils, who actively participated with great enthusiasm and asked many interesting questions. The team members dr Ivana Matić, dr Tatjana Stanojković, dr Katarina Kopčalić, dr Aleksandar Stepanović, and dr Nina Petrović talked about types of radiation, environmental exposure, biological response to irradiation, radiotherapy, and molecular biology techniques for investigating individual radiosensitivity. It was a great pleasure to share and exchange knowledge in radiobiology with such enthusiastic pupils and their teacher. The event brought together leading international experts in genotoxicology and human biomonitoring to discuss research and possible clinical applications. - [Short-term training visit of IORS team members at Medical Faculty Mannheim](https://radexiorsboost.com/short-term-training-visit-of-iors-team-members-at-medical-faculty-mannheim/): Members of the RadExIORSBoost project team and IORS PhD students,  Ivana Pašić and Maja Petrović, participated in a short-term visit to the Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University from 12 May to 24 May 2025. During their visit, they gained practical experience in a range of radiobiology techniques, such as magnetic separation as CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, followed by RNA isolation, assessing RNA integrity and quality, preparing samples for RNA sequencing and RNA-Seq pipeline analysis, conducting the Radiation-Induced Lymphocyte Apoptosis (RILA) assay, and analyzing RILA data using FlowJo software. They also conducted the Colony Formation Assay (CFA) and performed related calculations. Their visit featured a series of lectures and discussions on cutting-edge radiotherapy techniques and the latest approaches and advancements in radiobiology research. Marina Nikitović participated as a panelist in the session "Update of Protocols for Prostate Cancer Radiotherapy." - [Expert visit of Professor Prof. Dr. Siegfried Knasmüller](https://radexiorsboost.com/expert-visit-of-professor-prof-dr-siegfried-knasmuller/): Prof. Dr. Siegfried Knasmüller, a well-known and eminent expert in the field of genetic toxicology, and the RadExIORSBoost project member visited the team at the Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia from 13 April 2025 to 17 April 2025.  Prof. Knasmüller is the Head of the Environmental Toxicology Group at the Center for Cancer Research, Medical University of Vienna. The main research work of his group is focused on the assessment of induction of DNA damage and cancer by dietary, lifestyle, and occupational factors, as well as the detection of environmental mutagens. He participated in international and EU research projects, many national projects, and industrial studies. Prof. Knasmüller is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Mutation Research and co-editor of Food and Chemical Toxicology. This visit was a part of the RadExIORSBoost project administrative staff visit between two project partner institutions.  During their visit, Mrs. Adams and Dr. Veal have shared their valuable expertise in project management, research collaboration and partnership support.  They highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary project supervision to gain adequate skills for successful application and project implementation in various research fields. The structure of the University of Leicester was presented to IORS members, as well as the insights into processes of pre- and post-award managing and implementation. She is the Head of the Research and Education Division at the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana, Slovenia, the Head of the Department of Experimental Oncology, and a full professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Primorska. Prof. Čemažar’s main research interest is in the field of gene electrotransfer and gene therapy. She is the author of more than 350 scientific publications.  - [The RadExIORSBoost Educational seminar for cancer patients treated with radiotherapy](https://radexiorsboost.com/the-radexiorsboost-educational-seminar-for-cancer-patients-treated-with-radiotherapy/): Embracing the first day of spring, on March 20, 2025, the RadExIORSBoost team organized an educational seminar for patients with cancer titled "Personalized Approach in Radiotherapy: From Science to Clinic" at the Palace of Science in Belgrade. The seminar was organized in collaboration with the Serbian Society for the Fight Against Cancer and the Working Group for Patient Support of the Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia. The seminar provided a welcoming and pleasant environment where patients had the opportunity to learn about the basic principles and the importance of radiotherapy, as well as recommendations that should be followed during radiotherapy. The opening speech was held by dr sc. Ivana Matić, the RadExIORSBoost project leader and Doc. dr sc. med. Milan Žegarac, the director of the Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia. The sessions were chaired by Prof. dr sc. med. Marina Nikitović, and principal research fellow dr sc. Tatjana Stanojković. Dr sc. med. Aleksandar Stepanović presented modern radiotherapy approaches in the treatment of cancer patients, Dr Jelena Stanić talked about the adverse effects of radiotherapy, while Dr Katarina Kopčalić answered the most common questions related to cancer radiotherapy. Dr sc. Ivana Matić held a lecture about biological factors for the prediction of individual radiosensitivity and presented the main research concepts and goals of the RadExIORSBoost project. Dr sc. med. Marija Andrijić emphasized the importance of psychological support for cancer patients. The activities of the IORS Working Group for Patient Support were presented by Dr sc. med. Ana Jovićević, while Dr sc. Prof. Carsten Herskind is a project team member from the Cellular and Molecular Radiation Oncology Laboratory of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University. Prof. Carsten is the author of more than 100 publications focused mostly on radiosensitivity of cancer patients and radiation therapy; Genome Wide Association Study, as well as the normal tissue reactions to radiotherapy and patients’ quality of life.
