The RadExIORSBoost Project team had the honor and privilege of hosting Prof. Dr. Carsten Herskind, a distinguishing expert in radiobiology who visited the IORS team from 16 March 2025 to 20 March 2025. Prof. Carsten Herskind is a project team member from the Cellular and Molecular Radiation Oncology Laboratory of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University. Prof. Carsten is the author of more than 100 publications focused mostly on radiosensitivity of cancer patients and radiation therapy; Genome Wide Association Study, as well as the normal tissue reactions to radiotherapy and patients’ quality of life. The research group of Prof. Herskind and Prof. Veldwijk has participated in several significant multi-institutional national and international projects.
During his expert visit, Prof. Dr. Herskind held an interesting and inspiring lecture titled “Radiosensitivity in radiotherapy: From cell death and therapeutic window to FLASH irradiation” at the new amphitheater at the Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia. During the meeting “Meet the Expert”, Prof. Herskind and project team members discussed the main research approaches and challenges in the modern radiobiology research, with a focus on normal tissue reactions to radiotherapy. Team members received practical and valuable advice from this eminent scientist on how to structure and write an effective research paper.
The expert visit of Prof. Herskind was highly motivating and encouraging for project team members, PhD students, cancer researchers, medical physicists, and radiation oncologists.
