The RadExIORSBoost team members from the Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia (Dr. Tatjana Stanojković, Dr. Nina Petrović, and Dr. Ivana Matić) and from the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana (Dr. Tina Kos and Dr. Maša Omerzel) participated in a project workshop 7 titled “DNA Damage and Genotoxicity Testing in Cancer Risk Assessment”, organized from 4-8 May 2026 at the Center for Cancer Research, Medical University of Vienna.
This hybrid project workshop was hosted by eminent experts in human genotoxicology from MUW: Prof. Dr. Siegfried Knasmueller. Dr. Miroslav Mišík, Dr. Franziska Ferk, and Dr. Armen Nersesyan. Through excellent and insightful lectures delivered by Prof. Dr. Siegfried Knasmueller and Dr. Miroslav Mišík, participants had the opportunity to gain new knowledge on genotoxicity testing, different approaches in genotoxicity assessment, sensitivity and specificity of genotoxicity assays, and their applications in cancer research. Dr. Franziska Ferk delivered outstanding presentation on the basic principles of the comet assay. She also provided recommendations for the use of single cell gel electrophoresis assay in human intervention studies. Dr. Armen Nersesyan gave lectures on cytogenic tests and their applications for monitoring of occupational and lifestyle factors, as well as on micronucleus experiments with cancer patients. Workshop participants also heard a presentation from Dr. Mišík on the use of AI in publication preparation and on glyphosate and cancer risk. During the workshop, Prof. Dr. Michael Kundi delivered an inspiring lecture on the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of electromagnetic fields. Dr. Petra Heffeter presented an excellent overview of anticancer drug development from bench to bedside.
Workshop participants also had the excellent opportunity to learn from Dr. Miroslav Mišík and Dr. Franziska Ferk about single cell gel electrophoresis assay for the detection of oxidized DNA bases and for the detection of bases excision repair through practical training.
The RadExIORSBoost project team would like to thank the MUW project team for an excellent workshop.
